There are advantages to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). For example, genetically modified (GM) salmon can grow 4 times faster than traditionally bred salmon. That means one GM Salmon can feed a lot more people than the non-GMO. GM salmons can grow during winter while traditionally bred salmon can not. This means we can enjoy fresh salmon even when the oceans are frozen in winter. GMOs are great, right?
Here comes the bad. If the big GM salmons get released into the ocean, the traditionally bred salmon population could die out. This is because the females mate with the bigger males because they think the bigger ones know how to get the most food and how to avoid predators. Unfortunately, the GM salmons are bigger but don’t know how to get food in the ocean. The females depending on them for food may die because, in reality, the GM salmons do not know how to survive in the wild deep ocean.
Very cool
That's interesting. I'll be sure to take note of what I'm buying next time. Good to know! Thanks, C.C!!
